Maya-inspired Pottery Workshop at El Paso Museum of History

Join the El Paso Museum of History for a ceramics workshop with Johnny Galindo (Barro de Fuego) based in traditional, pre-colonization techniques. During this two-session workshop, participants will learn more about the history of Maya pottery and specific aesthetic techniques as well as how to create their own pieces inspired by these traditions. Participants will learn traditional hand-building methods (pinch, coil, slab) for pottery that can be utilized to create pieces without the assistance of a pottery wheel. The sessions will also cover decorative techniques used in traditional Maya pottery like appliqué, modeling, incising, and carving. Participants will also be able to optionally add color with slip painting for contrast. After the second workshop, pieces will be fired available for pick-up at the El Paso Museum of History. All supplies provided. About the Instructor Johnny Galindo is a ceramic artist and founder of Barro de Fuego, a studio practice rooted in Contemporary, pre-Columbian, and Maya aesthetics. He holds a BFA in Ceramics, Painting and a minor in Sculpture (2021). He works across functional pottery, sculptural ceramics, and private commissions. His work draws on Maya hand-building traditions — coil and slab construction, painting, incising, and burnishing — to create pieces that bridge historical technique with contemporary studio practice.
