Book & Supper Club: November
Book and Supper Club: Literary Gastronomy “Eating is our earliest metaphor.” Margaret Atwood Literary Gastronomy is a monthly book club focused on cooking recipes directly from the book of the month or inspired by the book of the month. Since this blend is unique, here are some details with you to encourage you to join! A book club is a group of people who meet to discuss a book or books that they have read and express their opinions, likes, dislikes, etc.. What is amazing about discussing literature is that we can explore diverse aspects of the human condition through fictional characters and situations. In turn, this helps develop a deeper level of self awareness and acceptance of others. A supper club is a group of people that come together on a specific date to share a meal. These clubs become tradition and often last for decades. Some people come together and cook from specific cookbooks or recipes based on regions or themes. One of my favorite writers, Joy Harjo says “The world begins at the kitchen table.” And I couldn’t agree more. Books and food have incredible power to bring people together and encourage rich connections. In our club, the book for the month is announced in the first week of the month, we read the book throughout the month independently and then meet on the last Sunday of the month to not only discuss the book, but to cook a meal together either directly from the book or inspired by the book. Hence a book AND supper club. It is going to be such an incredible experience, to bring the book to life together in a kitchen, then share how to book impacted us. Other’s experience will surprise you and you will create such heartfelt connection to the book by taking in the meals of the characters. I hope you will join, meet new friends both fictional and real, and share an incredible meal and guided discussion.
